This presentation explores the racialized labor of Black streamers through a lens of hyper visible and hyper racialized performances as (il)legitimate practice. Expanding on the notion of the default, white user, this presentation extrapolates how Black users are not seen as legitimate participants. Because women and people of color are not recognized as legitimate in virtual spaces, disparaging realities are rampant. Bourdieu’s “symbolic exclusion” is useful in understanding this concept of legitimacy. Any practice within cultural production can become the site of struggle over power, defining who’s entitled to take part in defining, shaping, and innovating in the digital.
