From street harassment to the targeted harassment of university faculty, harassment by members of the public occurs in online and on-the-ground spaces. In this paper I draw on two recent research projects to begin theorizing about public harassment and recognizing efforts at resistance. The first project examined how people use Twitter to share their experiences and organize against street harassment. The second looks at the ways in which faculty become targets of public harassment due to their research, teaching, or online personas. Together, these studies offer two approaches to understanding how harassment is experienced in public and by the public.
