Re-igniting Campus Activism on Gender-based Violence: A Call to Action Amidst Political Backlash

Fri, Nov 15, 11:10am to 12:25pm, Hilton Union Square, Floor: Lobby Level, Golden Gate 7 (LCD)

Session Submission Type: Sponsored Roundtable

Abstract

The election of Donald Trump and the appointment of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education has ignited the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements on one hand and an anti-feminist backlash that threatens to undermine struggles to end gender-based violence in higher education on the other (Suchland 2016, Wu 2017, Luther 2017, Uffalussy 2017). Roundtable participants will discuss strategies to re-ignite a nationwide movement of survivor-led, student activists, similar to the one that pushed gender-based violence into the national spotlight during the first part of this decade (Brodsky & Deutsch 2014; Clark & Pino 2016).
