Professional development (PD) provides an opportunity for teachers to grow in their practice, but this growth is mitigated by teachers’ buy-in for the PD. We examine factors that affect teacher buy-in for PD, creating profiles for 4 different levels of buy-in. Thematic analysis was based on field notes from the first year of a sustained PD focused on improving mathematics instruction. We determined that individual teacher buy-in was affected by (a) the teacher’s view of mathematics, (b) the teacher’s view of their students, and (c) the teacher’s perceived need for growth in their own practices
