This study focuses on the relationship between teachers' engagement in mathematical practices and the ways in which they provide opportunities for their students to engage in similar mathematical practices, such as conjecturing, reasoning, and attending to precision. We present cases of two secondary mathematics teachers, both of whom demonstrated sophistication with mathematical practices while solving tasks in a teacher study group but who differed in the opportunities they provided their students. Discourse analysis of classroom observation data revealed that one teacher prompted students to engage directly in mathematical practices whereas the other teacher often modelled mathematical practices for students.
