Children love to play games! Many commercial games include moments for rich mathematical learning, and could serve to engage students in mathematics class and re-engage parents in their children’s mathematical learning. The action research project, grounded in Dewey’s sense of experience, investigated grades 4 to 6 students’ mathematical learning through games focused on logical and spatial reasoning. Attending to game play and during reflective moments, students were able to develop and refine critical mathematical processes, including communication, reasoning, and visualization. Developing mathematical processes that are integral to elementary mathematics learning addresses an enduring challenge for meaningful learning.
