While enrolled in a content course on algebra for future teachers, preservice mathematics educators created concept maps representing their understanding of high school algebra at the beginning and end of the semester. The preservice teachers and the course instructor were asked to separately describe what they noticed in these mappings. The descriptions from the preservice teachers are compared to the descriptions provided by the instructor to look for commonalities and differences in what they noticed in the mappings. These descriptions help inform the variety of themes that students and instructors pay attention to when reflecting on assessments.
