DEVELOPING A HYPOTHETICAL LEARNING TRAJECTORY FOR MULTIPLICATIVE STRUCTURE

Description

In this session, participants will learn about a learning trajectory for prospective elementary teachers’ developing knowledge of multiplicative structure. Four constructs that make up the trajectory will be described in detail. Classroom video and transcripts of prospective teachers working on and discussing problems related to multiplicative structure will be shared and discussed. Participants will be asked to examine the classroom data for evidence of shifts in prospective teachers’ mathematical thinking with the goal of explicating and elaborating on the four constructs. Application of the trajectory to mathematics content courses for prospective elementary teachers will also be discussed.
