Evolution Of a Professional Development Observation Protocol: Noticing Aspects To Distinguish Facilitation

Mon, October 27, 4:30 to 5:30pm, Penn Stater Conference Center, Floor: Main Level, Deans Hall

Description

We will describe the process of developing a new professional development observation protocol, based on the Professional Development Observation Protocol (Horizon, 2005) and the Professional Development Observation Study (Banilower & Shimkus, 2004), and will delineate the three rounds of modification for our protocol and the resulting utility. Focal areas for describing various facilitation practices that are found in the framework include: Overall Participation, Student Thinking, Professional Connections, Content Knowledge, Instructional Practices, Instructional Materials, Reflection, Participation, and Discourse. Content will support those researching mathematics professional development and those studying classroom observation, including the use of observation instruments.
