The Mechanisms of Growth Mindset, Grit, and Social Support in Alleviating Math Anxiety Among Middle School Students

Mon, October 27, 2:30 to 3:15pm, Penn Stater Conference Center, Floor: Ground Level, Executive Room

Description

Math anxiety has been increasingly recognized as a significant obstacle to students’ mathematical learning and development. Exploring the mechanisms for alleviating math anxiety is not only crucial for students' mathematical achievement but also provides theoretical foundations for educational practice. Based on survey data from 668 Chinese middle school students, this study employs Smart-PLS software to construct a structural equation model, aiming to reveal the mechanisms through which growth mindset, grit (including perseverance of effort and consistency of interest), and social support (including parental support, teacher support, and classmate support) influence math anxiety. The results show that teacher support, classmate support, and perseverance of effort are direct factors that alleviate math anxiety, while growth mindset indirectly alleviates math anxiety through perseverance of effort.
