Novice Teachers Reflections on their Preparation to Teach Math

Mon, October 27, 4:30 to 5:30pm, Penn Stater Conference Center, Floor: Main Level, Deans Hall

Description

This study focused on the ways in which novice k-8 teachers perceived areas of strength and needs during their first in-service year of teaching mathematics. Data was collected via an anonymous survey that included Likert scale questions and short answer responses. The short answer responses focused on content and pedagogical knowledge, as well as gathered suggestions on ways to improve the preparation of future teachers. Results were compared to the 2017 The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators Standards for Preparing Teachers of Mathematics (SPTM). Preliminary results suggests a need to provide additional opportunities for pre-service teachers to apply pedagogical strategies prior to student teaching.
