We examine student spontaneous strategies to arrange two number lines when creating a graphical representation. Students employed a variety of strategies to coordinate two number lines to create a graph representing two quantities, but the creation of a Cartesian plane did not come up naturally to them. Through purposefully facilitated discussions, students recognized the coordinating meaning and properties of conventional Cartesian plane.
