Students who enter college underprepared for the first-year mathematics courses required for STEM majors face low retention and graduation rates. In this brief research report, we present the first iteration of a design experiment in which we designed mathematically-structured games and implemented lessons using those games to support the mathematical learning of these students. Our initial findings indicate that games modified or designed to reflect mathematical structures can be used to support meaningful engagement with these mathematical concepts.
