Despite its importance, the field lacks a survey knowledge of what algorithms children use for multi-digit multiplication and what common errors across them. This study examined 149 fourth-grade students' algorithm use as part of a larger research project. Results showed that the box model, partial products algorithm, and standard algorithm were most prevalent. Notably, the standard algorithm recorded the least correct answers on nearly all tasks. The most common errors across all algorithms were arithmetic, multiplication, and errors using partial products. Certain errors were more prevalent for particular algorithms. Implications are discussed but call for further analysis and examination of these trends.
