Exploring Dominant, Critical, And Affective Dimensions Of Community Mathematics With Caregivers

Tue, October 28, 8:00 to 9:15am, Penn Stater Conference Center, Floor: Main Level, 112

Description

As children’s first and most consistent teachers, caregivers can introduce children to mathematics for social justice in home and community settings. We share findings from an analysis of the mathematical descriptions and reflections from a community math walk done by Black and Latinx mothers. Analyzed through a framework for pedagogical goals in social justice mathematics, findings provide insight into how one Black mother framed community mathematics as addressing dominant, critical and affective dimensions.
