Tue, October 28, 8:00 to 9:15am, Penn Stater Conference Center, Floor: Second Level, 218

Description

This article examines how the home environment shapes mathematically gifted students from the parent and student perspectives. A mathematically talented student and his mother were interviewed. The interviews revealed alignment between the two perspectives. The analysis revealed pivotal moments that shaped the mathematically gifted student's learning and thinking. The parent supported the student by making mathematics explicit in the child's everyday world, mentoring and advocating for the child, providing autonomy, and reframing thinking when encountering obstacles to foster a growth mindset.
