Dualities Related to Mathematics for Citizenship: Beliefs of Mathematics Teacher Educators

Mon, October 27, 3:45 to 4:30pm, Penn Stater Conference Center, Floor: Main Level, 107

Description

How can mathematics be used to foster citizenship? The role that mathematics plays in developing informed, engaged, and empowered democratic citizens has been emphasized in recent calls by mathematics education organizations. Yet, we know little about how these calls are being taken up by the field. In this brief research report, we explore beliefs that mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) hold related to mathematics and citizenship through the analysis of 20 individual, semi-structured interviews. Findings suggest that dualities exist in MTEs’ beliefs about the types of mathematics that foster citizenship and the purposes of mathematics for citizenship. These dualities provide opportunities to consider the ways that mathematics for citizenship is related to school mathematics and how mathematics is portrayed in practice.
