This poster shares preliminary findings in our ongoing study exploring students’ perceptions of ethical use of GenAI in education and how this relates to using GenAI in their own work. Through cognitive interviewing, we investigate how students approach three unique mathematics tasks given the optional aid of a GenAI. Additionally, participants were asked about their view of GenAI in education and what they viewed as ethical use before and after completing the tasks. Our findings indicate students’ perceptions of what they consider using GenAI fairly may not always align with their practices due to certain circumstances, such as upcoming deadlines, perceptions of stagnation in problem solving, and pressure to succeed. These findings may have implications for teaching material and student assignments, classroom policies regarding the use of GenAI in problem solving, and overall ethics of integrating GenAI into educational spaces.
