This study examines the experiences of a young Black woman and African immigrant, Bella, as she made meaning of her math identity while negotiating different spaces in the U.S. school system. . In particular the study investigates how the coalescing of various identities—race, gender, and immigration status—helped in shaping her math trajectory, and how she navigated emotional and structural challenges.
