Traditional grading practices often get in the way of authentic learning in mathematics classes. In this paper, I describe the results of several iterations of non-traditional grading practices in a mathematics education course on algebraic reasoning for elementary and middle school education majors. In post-course conferences, students reported feeling less stress and more ability to focus on learning in courses that used specifications grading than they did in courses that used traditional grading practices.
