Positionality and Key Informants in Research in Graduate Math Education With an Application Toward Symplectic Geometry

Mon, October 27, 8:00 to 9:15am, Penn Stater Conference Center, Floor: Main Level, 109

Description

There has been growing interest in expanding math education research to investigate graduate math education specifically. There have been working groups on the specific topic at conferences in 2023 and 2024, so although there have been a wide variety of studies on graduate students in the past, what is new is the collective interest in the subject. As the subject is becoming a coherent focus of research, there are some questions on what makes it different from math education research or research in undergraduate math education. In this paper, I briefly describe the state of the field, possible directions it might take, how the relationship between researcher and researched might be fundamentally different from the prior mentioned fields, and the implications for research.
