Students’ Justification of Logarithm Rules from an APOS Perspective

Mon, October 27, 4:30 to 5:30pm, Penn Stater Conference Center, Floor: Main Level, Deans Hall

Description

There have been investigations into how students conceptualize exponents and logarithms that utilize APOS theory, particularly regarding how students justify exponent rules. The thesis by Williams (2011) offers a litany of codes to identify the conceptions that students have regarding logarithms. However, a gap in the literature remains on how students justify the corresponding rules for logarithms. In this paper, I present some preliminary results of such an investigation to extend her work.
