Mathematical modeling requires modelers to connect their extra-mathematical knowledge of the modeling task’s context with their mathematical understanding. While others have explored how extra-mathematical knowledge matters in modeling, we propose context image as a construct to explain how the context – mathematics connections happen. Context image is useful in explaining how a modeling task elicits different models from different modelers and how collaborative modeling can be productive. The construct also informs instruction.
