Comparing the Characteristics of Secondary Math Teachers with Varying Levels of Math Anxiety

Mon, October 27, 4:30 to 5:30pm, Penn Stater Conference Center, Floor: Main Level, Deans Hall

Description

Research on math anxiety in elementary teachers is prevalent in the fields of math education and educational psychology, and while researchers have begun to recognize and unpack math anxiety in secondary math teachers (SMTs), there is still much to be discovered. One question that remains, and which this study aims to begin to address, is: are there specific characteristics or traits that distinguish SMTs with math anxiety from those without? This study collected data on a wide variety of characteristics and analyzed those data using ANOVAs and other quantitative measures. Results showed that there were significant differences in several variables, including years of teaching experience, classes taught, math courses taken, and more.
