Niuna sconsolata: Girolamo Parabosco as Madrigalist

Thu, March 26, 8:30 to 10:00am, Hauptgebäude, Unter den Linden 6, Floor: Second Floor, 3059

Abstract

Girolamo Parabosco was recognized in his own day for both his literary and musical efforts, yet his music largely has lain dormant since the sixteenth century. I am preparing an edition of his Madrigali a cinque voci of 1546, the majority of which remains unavailable in modern transcription and receives only passing attention from scholars such as Einstein and Feldman. Feldman notes the book reflects modal ordering, yet I see promotional factors at work as well, including the placement of two of Parabosco’s own poems first, followed by the weightiest of his Petrarch settings. The current paper examines the book’s poetry and music in relation to Willaert’s Musica nova. While Parabosco pays homage to his teacher’s grave style and even models one madrigal on Willaert’s setting, the music of his book is more approachable and geared more toward commercial appeal, as I will demonstrate through an analysis of Niuna sconsolata.
