Transmission of Goods, Skills, and Responsibilities in Early Modern Venice: When Gender Matters

Fri, April 1, 3:30 to 5:00pm, Park Plaza, Floor: Lower Lobby, Terrace Room

Abstract

In Early Modern European societies, women and men did not have the same rights and access to resources, knowledge, power and responsibilities. Different juridical systems accorded different roles and possibilities to men and women, and the opposition between North and South, Roman law and customary law, Catholic and Protestant regions of Europe is often used as an explanation for these differences. In my paper, I would like to examine the peculiarities of Early Modern Venice in these matters, in comparison with other European and Italian States and regions.
