Based on a reconsideration of Girolamo da Carpi's paintings and his life and contacts with Bolognese, Mantuan, and Roman artists, this paper offers a new structure for his graphic catalogue. Insights into his collaboration with the Bolognese artists Biagio Pupini and Bartolomeo Bagnacavallo in San Michele in Bosco shed new light on the corpus of his drawings. For example, it now appears that, as Parmigianino and Vasari did later, da Carpi made copies after Raphael's Scuola d'Atene and Disputa when he visited Rome in 1525 and that, as a consequence, many drawings in his catalogue must have been executed over a longer period than previously thought. The paper also reconsiders issues regarding his books of sketches after the antique (in Turin, Philadelphia, and London), leading to a reevaluation of the autography and attribution of many drawings in public and private collections as well as the art market.
