Peruzzi's Presentation: A Closer Look at a Complex Painting

Thu, March 30, 5:30 to 7:00pm, Palmer House Hilton, Floor: Seventh Floor, Burnham 1

Abstract

Baldassarre Peruzzi is most frequently noted for his architecture, but he was also prolific, though less recognized, as an artist. A prime example of his artistic endeavors is seen in his composition, "The Presentation of the Virgin," completed between approximately 1523–24 for Santa Maria della Pace. This fresco merits an incisive review for its densely packed composition. From the remarkable array of background architectural elements that usurp visual attention to the dynamic portrayal of the narrative occurring in the foreground, Peruzzi's “Presentation” can be seen, as this paper will argue, as his contemplation of his practice as both artist and architect at one of the most dynamic moments of his career. Incorporated in this paper will be a discussion of Peruzzi's contemporary architectural projects and also evidence of ongoing visual discourse with prior competitors Raphael (posthumously) and Sebastiano del Piombo as they relate to this composition.
