Fra Filippo Lippi’s last mural project was for the apse decoration in the Duomo of Spoleto, executed between 1466 and the artist’s death in 1469. This paper looks at the ways in which Lippi adapted his Tuscan artistic idiom to the visual traditions of Umbria. The circumstances of the commission, in which the Bishop of Spoleto, Berardo Eroli, played an important role, will be examined, as well as the integration of local artisans with Lippi’s Tuscan assistants in the workshop.
