Ficino, Apollo, and the Germans

Fri, March 31, 1:30 to 3:00pm, Palmer House Hilton, Floor: Seventh Floor, Clark 7

Abstract

This paper will follow the development of Ficino’s De sole, from its early version, composed in letters to Count Eberhard of Württemberg beginning in June 1492, to the extended version completed in 1493 and ultimately published with an earlier work on light. This appeared just as Ficino’s fascination with the anagogical potential of light theory was becoming most productive, through his re-exploration of the writings of Dionysius. Following the progressive development of this text allows us further insight into his own creative process, and helps us to appreciate the importance this theme holds in the writings of his final years. It also indicates the high regard in which he held the founder of the University of Tübingen and those who taught there.
