According to the biographer Malvasia (1672), Agostino Carracci was invited to Venice by a "certain Bertelli...and by Rosigotti and others, who competed with one another to get him under contract." The Bertelli family and Donato Rosigotti [or Rasicotti] were important Venetian publishers, whose respective names (addresses) indeed appear on several of Agostino’s prints. As the dates on the prints confirm, he was in Venice at least twice: in 1582, when he primarily engraved after Veronese’s paintings, and again from 1588 until 1589, immediately after Veronese’s death, when his attention shifted to Tintoretto. This paper will explore the broader implications of Agostino’s decision to make prints after living artists in Venice.
