Digital time is fast. In the span of a few years, incorporating geo-coded images and sites into a database seems to be old news. Until now, however, the pervasive methodology has privileged the “how” in mapping; to fully integrate this rich resource, it is time to flip the paradigm and explore the “what” and the “why”. This paper examines projects under development or undertaken by the Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT, in partnerships with other institutions, utilizing digitized georeferenced text-based assets—including annotated abstracts and primary sources—in order to contextualize text within their historical, temporal, and geographic specificity.
