This paper will approach the phenomenon of counsel and counselling from the perspective of a broadly conceived history of obedience. It will investigate, by drawing on a variety of sources from different social contexts, the boundaries between enforced, recommended, and voluntary compliance with external suggestions for acting. Both the differences and the similarities, and, more broadly speaking, the relationship between different forms of imposing one’s will on another person will be investigated.
