"Admirable events divinely happened": Notes on Gianfrancesco Pico della Mirandola’s Hagiography

Sat, April 1, 8:30 to 10:00am, Palmer House Hilton, Floor: Seventh Floor, Clark 1

Abstract

Gianfrancesco Pico della Mirandola wrote three biographies: the Ioannis Pici Mirandulae Vita (1496), dedicated to his uncle Giovanni Pico, the Vita Hieronymi Savonarolae (1530), dedicated to the Dominican friar, and the Compendio delle cose mirabili di Caterina da Racconigi (1532), which tells the life of the mystic Caterina da Racconigi. The last two works, which describe the life story of people considered "saints" by Gianfrancesco Pico, have some hagiography’s features. The primary speech’s aim is to underline the moral and religious purpose of Pico’s works, which will be put into the XVI century cultural and historical context. Furthermore it will be examined the relationship between the two Pico’s texts and the classical hagiographic models, particularly the Franciscan model, highlighting some elements which derives from medieval exempla, filtered by Humanistic thought.
