Session Submission Type: Roundtable
How did early modern practices and theories of translation differ from our own? How were those differences shaped by the competition of Europe's vernacular languages with Latin and with one another? And in what ways should we be thinking about translation as the sine qua non for our ongoing study of early modern literature and culture? These were questions posed in a recent volume of essays dedicated to early modern translation in Europe, China, and North America from 1300–1750 (Penn, 2015), questions which will be addressed anew by contributors to the volume and external scholars. Given the rapid growth of the field of translation studies and renewed interest in the history of translation, speakers will also offer an assessment of recent work and possibilities for future study.
