Roundtable: Reading John Dee’s Marginalia: Expanding the Archaeology of Reading in Early Modern Europe

Thu, March 30, 5:30 to 7:00pm, Palmer House Hilton, Floor: Third Floor, Salon 3

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Abstract

The Archaeology of Reading in Early Modern Europe (www.bookwheel.org), a multi-year Digital Humanities initiative sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, has extended its exploration of early modern marginalia in books annotated by Gabriel Harvey to his contemporary, and fellow serial annotator, John Dee. This roundtable addresses particular challenges, and sources of new scholarly discovery, presented by this expanded corpus of annotated books made accessible, and searchable, within the Archaeology of Reading digital research environment. Among a variety of other elements, roundtable panelists will address the scholarly implications of: (1) the presence of multiple annotators within a single book; (2) Dee’s deployment of extensive visual and tabular forms of annotation; (3) and the composite expansion of the intellectual content contained within these books through the interpolation and intervention of tertiary materials in the physical spaces of these material texts.
