2-182 - The influence of biological, school and neighborhood contexts on ethnic/racial identity development

Fri, March 20, 1:55 to 3:25pm, Marriott, Floor: Level 4, Franklin Hall 11

Session Type: Conversation Roundtable

Integrative Statement

Moderator: Tiffany Yip, Department of Psychology, Fordham University

Developmental scientists are increasingly appreciating the value of multi- and interdisciplinary perspectives to understanding the processes underlying change. The current conversation roundtable extends conversations originating in an interdisplinary working group of scholars from public health, sociology, genomics, family studies, education and psychology focusing on ethnic/racial identity (ERI) among minority youth. The proposed conversation will focus on how biological, school and neighborhood contexts influence ERI content and development.
Each of the three panelists will respond to questions about how their respective level of context relates to ERI content and development. Next, the moderator will direct the panelist to converse with each other to discuss cross-context influences on ERI to foster an more integrated and multi-faceted understanding of ERI. Finally, the panelists and the audience will engage in discussion on contextual influences on ERI development.
The roundtable format is particularly well-suited to the topic due to the relatively nascent interdisciplinary approach. As such, participation from the panelist and the audience will create an interactive and lively discussion about what we currently know about ERI content and development, as well as potential areas for future directions including other courses of contextual influences on ERI.
