3-173 - It takes a village: Short & long-term effects of interventions to promote school readiness in children at-risk for school failure

Sat, March 21, 1:55 to 3:25pm, Marriott, Floor: Level 4, Franklin Hall 4

Session Type: Paper Symposium

Integrative Statement

Children’s socio-emotional and self-regulatory skills are critical for school success. This symposium examines three early interventions focused on promoting school readiness for children at-risk and includes a discussant who is an expert in this area.
The first paper examines the impact of a summer program for children with behavior problems by comparing three groups: a prekindergarten summer class (behavioral modification + academic curriculum) + parent training (STP-PreK); an enhanced version of the first group, which also included daily (2-hours) social-emotional/self-regulation training (STP-PreK Enhanced), and a Parent Training Only group. The strongest effects for improving academic and self-regulation were found for the STP-PreK Enhanced group.
The second paper explores the efficacy of the Kids in Transition to School (KITS) Program in promoting self-regulatory, social, and literacy skills in children with developmental disabilities and behavior problems before kindergarten. Results indicated that KITS had significant effects on academic and social skills at the end of first grade with the effects operating through changes in self-regulation during kindergarten.
The third paper examines the long-term effects of the REDI preschool intervention on executive function (EF) through elementary school. REDI had a significant impact on EF at end of pre-kindergarten for children with moderate EF, and a significant impact on growth in EF from pre-kindergarten through 5th grade for children in the low EF group.
The Discussant, an expert in self-regulation/social-emotional skills in children at-risk for school failure, will discuss the implications of these studies.
