1-039 - Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Impact of Parental Incarceration on Children and Families

Thu, March 19, 10:10 to 11:40am, Marriott, Floor: Level 4, Franklin Hall 11

Session Type: Conversation Roundtable

Integrative Statement

Research examining the impact of parental incarceration on children and families conducted in different theoretical perspectives has yielded different, and at times conflicting, results. The proposed roundtable discussion will bring together experts in the field to discuss the research which has shown detrimental (e.g., Murray, Farrington & Sekol, 2012), null (Aaron & Dallaire, 2010), and even positive effects (Turanovic et al., 2012) of parental incarceration on child health and well-being. Panelists will address differences in findings by parent gender and ethnicity, as well as by methodological approach (qualitative versus quantitative) and differences found between American and European samples. Implications for policy and future research will be discussed.
