Session Type: Poster Symposium
Although research has established the potential buffering role of quality child care for vulnerable children, most has focused on center-based child care rather than home-based child care (HBC). Of the approximately 1.6 million children receiving federal subsidies for child care each month in 2011, 33% were in HBC (ACF 2011 Final Data Tables). Thus, HBC is an important, but understudied context. Research on the unique characteristics of HBC settings and providers could inform quality improvement initiatives such as state Quality Rating and Improvement Systems aimed at improving outcomes for low-income children. In this symposium, we bring together researchers who have been studying HBC across multiple levels. Three posters examine providers’ capacities to negotiate the complexities of their work and support children’s development. Two posters examine the quality of children’s experiences in HBC: one examines the language and literacy environments in relation to a QRIS, and another examines the efficacy of an intervention to improve quality among HBC providers. The final poster presents a new conceptual model for developing a measure of relationship-based quality improvement to support HBC providers. Each study’s results have clear policy implications and help articulate the complexities of HBC with implications for how to better support caregivers and the children in their care. The proposed symposium would provide a venue for the dissemination of these related studies with rich material appropriate for the interactivity possible during the integrative discussion that is part of a poster symposium.
