1-042 - Bridging Research and Practice: Using Web-based Training to Promote Early Childhood Interventions for Children in Poverty

Thu, March 19, 10:10 to 11:40am, Marriott, Floor: Level 5, Grand Ballroom Salon A

Session Type: Conversation Roundtable

Integrative Statement

A promising pathway for disseminating evidence-based practices to parents and educators is web-based training, which, compared to face-to-face instruction, can potentially reach many learners in varied locations at diverse times and for minimal initial investment. The purpose of this roundtable is to foster conversation among four research teams who are leading the field in translating research in early cognitive and/or social development into rigorously studied parent and educator practice via web-based training and supports. Guided by Bransford, Brown, and Cocking’s (2002) seminal review, How People Learn, the group will address questions about how best to develop web-based professional development for adult learners. Each team will briefly discuss their web-mediated intervention(s) and the evidence of their effectiveness, and then respond to several key questions reflecting one component of the overarching How People Learn framework. The moderator will also ensure that each participant has the organic opportunity to respond to others’ remarks and to address other relevant aspects of the framework. The discussion will inform how the sites are designed to ensure that adults acquire the intended information and can implement specific practices. The discussion will inform how the sites are designed to ensure that adults acquire the intended information and can implement specific practices. The discussion also will provide practical guidance of lessons learned in training to maintain fidelity of implementation when engaging in web-based learning. How the websites support the dissemination of research to practice will be considered.
