1-159 - Translating Attachment-Based Interventions: From University Incubation to Community Implementation and Dissemination

Integrative Statement

Multiple attachment-based programs with strong evidence of efficacy are increasingly being implemented in community settings, explicitly outside of controlled research trials and with an eye toward integrating attachment intervention protocol into comprehensive social service systems. Results so far are promising, both in terms of broadening the reach of attachment theory- and research-based interventions, and in terms of demonstrated positive effects. At the same time, many issues remain to be addressed, especially with respect to (a) fidelity and quality control, and (b) long-term sustainability.
This symposium will present three papers, each describing the community implementation of an evidence-based attachment program. The first paper will describe the development and community implementation of the Circle of Security-Parenting (COS-P), an 8-session program designed deliberately for purposes of program scalability that is currently being evaluated in several inner city Head Start centers. The second paper will describe recent research findings about the implementation of the Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) program as one component of community-based child welfare services, provided by child welfare staff, and drawing on specific indicators of the interveners’ “In-the-Moment” comments made to participating mothers. The third paper will describe recent research findings from an ongoing multi-pronged initiative for low-income young mothers that includes Child-Parent Psychotherapy as one component.
The discussant will synthesize findings in the context of her own related work, especially with respect to issues pertaining to (a) maintaining program fidelity and (b) the long-term sustainability of attachment programs in community settings.
