1-176 - Video Coaching: An innovative approach to supporting children and families

Thu, March 19, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Penn CC, Floor: 300 Level, Room 304

Session Type: Conversation Roundtable

Integrative Statement

This exciting roundtable discussion will bring together leading scientists and clinicians in the field of video coaching from around the globe. In recent years, video coaching has emerged as a particularly promising approach to strengthening parent-child interaction and a number of programs have been developed and tested worldwide, including programs in the United States, Europe and Africa. Most of these approaches involve a three-step process of filming, analysis and feedback. Beyond this basic format, however, programs vary considerably. A growing body of empirical research indicates that video coaching can change parenting behavior, improve parental attitudes, and promote positive outcomes for children (Fukkink, 2008; Baldin, Wirtberg & Hansson, 2014). Yet critical questions remain. For whom is video coaching most helpful? What is the optimal approach to filming, analysis and feedback? What specific aspects of parenting should be targeted and how should outcomes be measured? This conversation will gather an international panel of experts to discuss these issues, with each panelist representing a different approach to video coaching.
