Leveraging advances in fundamental characterizations of the ASD phenotype, intervention science is rapidly altering the landscape of ASD research. In this symposium, both parent mediated and child focused interventions highlight the breadth of work in this domain. Shire and colleagues and Change and colleagues present evidence that parent training significantly affects parents’ responsive behavior (Shire et al.) and children’s symbolic play (Chang et al.), respectively. Rolison and collagues present evidence that 4 months of pivotal response treatment in 4-6 year-olds significantly alter electrophysiological responses thought to index social information processing. In sum, these studies highlight the cutting-edge of intervention science and also promise to herald optimism for families with young children with ASD.
