Session Type: Paper Session
The papers in this symposium examine processes contributing to vocabulary development in low-SES and under-represented populations. The first paper examines lexical processing skills and vocabulary development among toddlers living in rural villages in Africa. The second paper examines the abstract or decontextualized speech input that low-income, minority, American fathers use with their toddlers and children’s vocabulary development. Paper three examines whether parenting stress is a key factor in explaining the link between SES and the quantity of speech American parents offer their 5-7 year old children. And, the final paper presents longitudinal findings from a randomized controlled reading intervention to increase vocabulary for 4 and 5 year old Uyghur children living in Xinjiang province China. Taken together these papers provide a broad view of the myriad factors contributing to language development in diverse populations.
