2-158 - Sensory-Motor Developing Processes Underlying Language, Attention, and Perception of the Environment

Fri, March 20, 1:55 to 3:25pm, Penn CC, Floor: 100 Level, Room 106AB

Session Type: Paper Session

Integrative Statement

The session gathers studies on sensory-motor developing processes (vision, eye-hand coordination, locomotion), and their consequences on language, attention, knowledge of the external world. The first paper examines the possibility that emotion discriminability and visual exploration of the face support language skills among 6- to 12-month-old infants. The second paper is a fine analysis of head, hand, and eye movements that comprise moments of focused attention in 36-month-olds during free play interaction with their mother. The third paper investigates the processes guiding 13- and 19-month old infants’ locomotor exploration. The fourth paper investigates the development of perception of 3D layout from 6 to 12 years (compared with adults). Children’s perceptual judgments are compared with those predicted by optimal inference and the underlying neuronal representations are investigated by decoding the activity in different cortical visual areas using fMRI with MVPA (multi-voxel pattern analysis).
