3-054 - Positive Adaptation of Children and Adolescents with Different Cultural Background in a Global Perspective

Integrative Statement
This symposium is the product of a meeting funded by the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) Strategic Plan Initiatives to advance knowledge on positive adaptation of immigrant children and youth from a global perspective. The initiative was promoted by the SRCD Ethnic and Racial Issues (ERI) Committee and the International Affairs Committees in collaboration with the European Association of Developmental Psychology (EADP) and the European Association for Research on Adolescence (EARA). The papers in this symposium provide new insight on explanatory mechanisms on what is presently known about positive youth development (PYD) and positive adaptation of children and adolescents across a variety of cultures and national contexts. They also address a recent call to explain why and under which conditions positive adaptation occurs from the standpoint of both PYD and resilience perspectives (Marks, Ejesi, & Garcia Coll, 2014). The first paper investigates family and culture level predictors of youth adjustment across nine cultural contexts and is supplemented by a paper on cultural adaptation of social emotional competence interventions for children and youth in a global perspective. The third paper presents an empirical study on cultural values in risky and prosocial behaviors among racially diverse youth in the US. Findings and policy implications will be addressed by a leader in the field, who will frame the discussion in the context of the broader literature on the organizing scope of this symposium.
