3-126 - Extending the Reach of Evidence-Based Parenting Programs through Adaptation Research

Integrative Statement

Evidence-based parenting programs can have widespread impacts on child and parent health and development for families in poverty; however, critical gaps exist in the availability of parenting programs designed and evaluated for fathers and Spanish speaking families. Research on the adaptation of evidence-based parenting programs and effective parent engagement strategies for these underserved populations can expand the reach of parenting programs and promote the healthy development of more children. The papers included in this symposium, representing four different universities/institutions, address this gap by describing three different approaches to evaluating parent engagement and/or cultural congruency of evidence-based parenting programs adapted for either fathers or Spanish speaking families. The first paper, describes data associated with intervention completion, parenting skill development, and parent satisfaction from the fatherhood adaptation of the evidence-based SafeCare® home visiting program. The second paper, describes pre-implementation focus group data on the cultural fit with Spanish speaking Latina mothers and recommended parent engagement strategies for the Spanish language adaptation of the evidence-based Legacy for ChildrenTM (Legacy) public health parenting program. The third paper examines parent-child, parent-parent, and parent-program engagement outcomes 1) within curriculum implementations and, 2) between the English curriculum and the Spanish adaptation of the Legacy curriculum. The discussant will highlight the importance of these data to expand the reach of parenting programs and important next steps for this work using recommendations from a recent National Academies of Sciences report on parenting as a framework.
