3-071 - New Insights into the Structure of Psychopathology: The Dysregulation Profile and the General Factor of Psychopathology

Sat, April 8, 10:30am to 12:00pm, Austin Convention Center, Meeting Room 12B

Session Type: Paper Symposium

Integrative Statement

In the past decade, there has been a growing interest in research examining the structure of developmental psychopathology. We are moving away from a narrow view in which specific psychiatric disorders, such as ADHD and anxiety disorders, are seen as entirely unique entities. More and more research is showing that as comorbidity is very high (i.e. psychiatric disorders often co-occur together), we need new ways to look at the structure of psychopathology. This symposium is inspired by recent factor-analytical approaches to examine the structure of common mental disorders, by implying that the propensity to develop any common mental disorder can be summarized by one underlying factor (i.e., the general psychopathology factor or the Dysregulation Profile).

The first paper discusses factorial research of the Child Behavior Checklist - Dysregulation Profile: demonstrating it is best conceptualized as a broad syndrome of dysregulation, associated with a broad range of adverse external criteria. The second paper examined the general factor of psychopathology approach, a latent variable underlying emotional and behavioral problems, demonstrating relations with IQ, temperament, and brain development. The third paper is an investigation into potential overlap and differences between the Dysregulation Profile and the general factor of psychopathology, showing that these two approaches might be more alike than different. All researchers will discuss methodological approaches to examining the structure of psychopathology as well as clinical implications of these models.
Our discussant, an expert in the field of child and adolescent developmental psychopathology, will discuss these findings and lead the audience discussion.
