2-009 - Investigating child development: Federal data available for secondary analysis from the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services

Integrative Statement

This symposium will describe opportunities for secondary data analysis and datasets available from the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services that can be used by researchers to address questions related to child development. Presentations will address the benefits of using secondary data, funding opportunities from NIH that are well-suited to this work, and descriptions of data available for secondary data analysis from the following studies: the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 (ECLS-K:2011); the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort (ECLS-B); the National Household Education Surveys Program (NHES); Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study; the National Survey of Early Care and Education (NSECE); the Head Start Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES); the Early Head Start Family and Child Experiences Study (Baby FACES); the Head Start CARES Evaluation; the Child Development Supplement to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics; the Child Sample of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979; the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study; the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey; and the Family Life Project (FLP) birth cohort study of children growing up in rural poverty. Each of the presentations will describe the populations to which the studies generalize, the key features of the studies, research issues that can be investigated with the studies, and how to access the study data. The session will conclude with information on tools and resources available to support secondary data analysis at the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR).
